SUMMARY:Book Launch Event in Celebration of Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch Event in Celebration of Women’s History Month\n \nMarch 29th\, 2024 | 6:30pm to 7:30pm EST | Hybrid \nEast City Bookshop\, 645 Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast ##100 Washington\, DC 20003\n  \nEast City Bookshop in partnership with the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and WBEC Greater DMV welcomes Denny S. Bryce to discuss her new novel\, Can’t We Be Friends: A Novel of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe\, in conversation with Victoria Christopher Murray.\nABOUT CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS \nAward-winning author Denny S. Bryce and USA Today bestselling author Eliza Knight collaborate on a brilliant novel that uncovers the boundary-breaking\, genuine friendship between Ella Fitzgerald\, the Queen of Jazz\, and iconic movie star Marilyn Monroe. \nOne woman was recognized as the premiere singer of her era with perfect pitch and tireless ambition. \nOne woman was the most glamorous star in Hollywood\, a sex symbol who took the world by storm. \nAnd their friendship was fast and firm… \n1952: Ella Fitzgerald is a renowned jazz singer whose only roadblock to longevity is society’s attitude toward women and race. Marilyn Monroe’s star is rising despite ongoing battles with movie studio bigwigs and boyfriends. When she needs help with her singing\, she wants only the best—and the best is the brilliant Ella Fitzgerald. But Ella isn’t a singing teacher and declines—then the two women meet\, and to everyone’s surprise but their own\, they become fast friends. \nOn the surface\, what could they have in common? Yet each was underestimated by the men in their lives—husbands\, managers\, hangers-on. And both were determined to gain. Each fought for professional independence and personal agency in a time when women were expected to surrender control to those same men. \nThis novel reveals and celebrates their surprising bond over a decade and serves as a poignant reminder of how true friendship can cross differences to bolster and sustain us through haunting heartbreak and wild success. \nDENNY S. BRYCE is an award-winning and bestselling author of historical fiction\, including Wild Women and the Blues. She is also an adjunct professor in the MFA program at Drexel University\, a book critic for NPR\, and a member of the Historical Novel Society\, Women’s Fiction Writers Association\, and Tall Poppy Writers. Currently\, she resides in Savannah\, Georgia. \nVICTORIA CHRISTOPHER MURRAY is an acclaimed author with more than one million books in print. She has written more than twenty novels\, including Stand Your Ground\, an NAACP Image Award Winner for Outstanding Fiction and a Library Journal Best Book of the Year. SUMMARY:Lunch with the Experts: Conflict to Innovation\, Managing Conflict at Work to Increase Employee Engagement
DESCRIPTION:  \nLunch with the Experts: Conflict to Innovation\, Managing Conflict at Work to Increase Employee Engagement\nTuesday\, April 23rd\, 2024\n12:00pm–1:00pm ET \n  \nConflict at work costs the U.S. over $400 billion a year. What is it costing you and what can you do about it?\nThis workshop will dive into the details of conflict costs as well as best practices to turn conflict into innovation. Walking participants through a case study of a performance management issue\, Gina will lay out the conflict warning signs\, impacts on teams\, and ways to manage people while building trust\, fostering an innovative culture\, and increasing employee engagement.\nEspecially geared to team leaders and business owners employing more than 20 people\, this highly interactive workshop will also offer participants an opportunity to think through their own approaches to conflict and meet fellow participants to pool ideas and strategies. \n  \nThis is the workshop for you if you’ve witnessed: \n• Managers afraid to address critical issues\, from chronic lateness to ignoring mission-required documentation;\n• Team members refusing to acknowledge each others’ contributions – or trying to take credit for others’ work;\n• Blatant arguing in front of leaders and customers; or\n• Physical violence erupting at work due to senior leaders ignoring mounting stress and overwhelming workloads.\nIn just one hour\, you’ll walk away armed with:\n• A better understanding of how to account for the impacts of conflict on your business’s bottom line;\n• The knowledge of which types of conflict are best handled by a neutral third party;\n• And\, best practices to foster trust and innovation while calming down disputes. \n \n \nGina D’Andrea Weatherup believes we spend too much time working to not be happy at work. Building a happier workplace pays dividends in employee engagement\, team dynamics\, and innovation – that’s why this former nonprofit professional turned mediator founded Chantilly Mediation and Facilitation (CM&F) in 2018. As the CEO of CM&F\, Gina leads clients through conflict\, creating stronger\, happier\, more engaged workforces. Gina holds a Master of Arts degree in Women’s and Gender Studies from The George Washington University\, and a Professional Certificate in the Science of Happiness at Work. Gina is a member of the Virginia Mediation Network and serves as the Treasurer of the Mid-Atlantic Facilitator Network (MAFN). \n\n\nClick to register!
